Nearly all of us snore from time to time, but that's not what I'm addressing here. I'm addressing chronic snoring, where the snorer's problem is so bad that it affects, not just them, but their partner and even the rest of the family.

Let's make one thing very clear: snoring at night isn't a joke! It's an extremely serious problem for health (physical and mental) and relationships. Many relationships just don't survive the constant sleepless nights.

If your relationship is in danger because of your, or your partner's night snoring, then you neeed to do something about it, and fast.

As a start, let's consider first what actually causes snoring at night... And here's the first thing to realise, and that is that snoring can only occur when you are asleep. You don't snore when you're awake. Now I know this may seem obvious, but I bring it up because it really illustrates the actual cause of snoring.

When you are asleep, the muscles and soft tissue in your air passages tend to relax. So that when you are in the prone sleeping position -- especially on your back -- the tissue falls into your airways, restricting them.

How do these restricted airways give rise to snoring? Well, the air that flows through them as you breathe in and out, has to flow much faster because of the restricted space. This sets up turbulent airflow which causes the tissues in the airways to vibrate, causing the snoring sounds.

Well, that's the cause of snoring, now we can discuss how to stop snoring at night...

Of course, you have no control over what you do in your sleep, so that anything you do to try to prevent night snoring, has to be done during your waking hours. And you can do several things...

I have purposely put this first: consult your doctor about your snoring. This is important, not only because snoring could be the sign of some other health problems, but you get an insight into how bad your condition is and what your options are for treatment.

Next, with your doctor's help, you will probably have to make some changes to your lifestyle. This includes such as weight reduction, stop smoking, no meals before bed, avoid alcohol before bed, change of sleeping position, no tranquilizers, etc.

You also need to become familiar with the many stop snoring products out there. These include things like CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) devices, nasal strips, anti snoring pillows and anti snoring mouthpieces, etc.

There are also natural remedies for snoring that utilize things along the lines of acupuncture, aromatherapy, homeopathic remedies, herbal remedies, etc.

A final option is surgery. And it is a final option, only to be used in serious cases where all else has failed. You need to speak closely to your doctor about this option.

If you follow these 5 tips, then I'm sure success will follow and you'll be able to stop snoring at night so that you and your partner can get a good night's sleep at last.
